It seems pretty arrogant to believe that Christianity is the only way to heaven given that there are so many in this world that believe differently. How do you as Christians justify this?
A: Great question and we understand why you may believe this to be an “arrogant” position relative to Christianity. That being said, when evaluating religions it is appropriate to look at the historical truths as well as moral clarity. As Timothy Keller states, “Many say that it is ethnocentric to claim that one religion is superior to another, yet, isn’t that statement ethnocentric unto itself?” If one believes it is impossible to “know God” then perhaps there is merit to equalizing all religions. However, God came to the earth in the form of Jesus Christ. This is where one must look at the exegesis of scripture with a critical eye relative to the original writings. It is important to recognize that these were done from a historical perspective. Only later were these writings compiled into what is now the Christian Bible. So, if one begins their truth journey from a historical perspective, it may be easier to recognize that Christinaity comes from a basis of historical fact. The Scriptures are not fantasy nor well written fiction. In the milieu of those times, language depended upon the sharing of factual information. And there is more information regarding Jesus Christ than any other person in that era,
We would also put forth the perspective that if religious choice is made based upon what we wish God to be rather than who God really is, then religion becomes humanistic. It is at this point where we develop a situation where God exists to serve us rather than one where we serve God. One often hears, “God is love” and a loving God cannot be vengeful. However, what would the world look like without righteousness and justice? These are certainly hallmarks of Christian doctrine and unfortunately many people find this to be inconsistent with their personal needs.
Once a historical and faith collective has brought one to the conclusion that Christian doctrine is true and Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, it is more easily understood why the scripture as written in John 14:6 is true and valid. As Christ stated, “no one comes to the Father except through Me.” God outlined His original plan in Genesis where mankind was to be perfect as He was. Unfortunately, original sin rendered that impossible, thus in order to achieve God’s original plan, the perfect sacrifice was required. For Christ lived the life we could not and died the death we deserve. And this was made possible because God gave HIS Son as our substitute. And God, in the form of Jesus Christ stood in for us. As is written, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that he who believes shall not perish but have everlasting life.” Therefore, as difficult as it may be, when we look at the situation through the lens of “God’s expectations”, we see that there is no path to redemption except through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
